As the project progresses, Design+Build students take the next critical steps by focusing on stem wall construction. This involves accurately placing forms, ensuring proper alignment, and pouring concrete to create the elevated base that supports the structure above, enhancing stability.
Constructing Forms
Wood forms are essential during stem wall construction, serving as molds to shape and support the concrete until it cures. They ensure precision, prevent spillage, maintain structural integrity, and accommodate design details like anchor placements. Proper forms enhance safety, efficiency, and the durability of the finished structure.
Pouring with Precision
Once the footing is ready, concrete is poured into the forms, consolidated to remove air pockets, and left to cure. Pouring with precision is important considering the varying heights of the stem wall. After curing, the forms are removed, and the stem wall is inspected and finished to ensure structural integrity.
Stem Wall Reveal
Given the site’s varying terrain, a stem wall was constructed to provide a solid foundation for the building while accommodating the floor plan. Building the stem wall offers students valuable insights into foundational systems and the various structural layers involved.
