Curating Strong Foundations III: Finishing Foundation
November 20, 2024
To wrap up the semester, Design+Build students have been diligently focused on completing their primary goal—finishing the foundation. This includes ensuring structural integrity, carefully pouring the stem walls, and completing all necessary finishing touches to prepare the foundation for the next stages of the project.
Sand Shoveling
A crucial aspect of building a strong foundation involves the use of sand. A truck delivered approximately four tons of sand to the site, and students applied their strength and patience to shovel and level the material, ensuring a solid and stable foundation was created.
Rebar Tieing
In finalizing the foundation, rebar is placed and tied together to reinforce the structure, providing support against tension and preventing cracking. Sand is then poured to create a smooth, stable base for the concrete, ensuring proper weight distribution, drainage, and preventing moisture-related issues.
Final Pour
Leveling and Smoothening
The final step of the foundation involves pouring a layer of concrete, then smoothing and leveling it to create a solid, even surface. Once set, the concrete is polished, ensuring the foundation is strong and ready for the next phase of construction.
